SCHOOL TOUR 3RD – 6TH CLASS 2015

On the 23rd of June, the pupils of RUSHEEN N.S. from 3rd to 6th classes went to Cobh for a school tour.  When we arrived in Cobh, the first thing we did was to go on a tour of the outside of Cobh Cathedral.  Next we went into the crypt under Cobh Cathedral which held the bodies of six past  Bishops.  There was a spooky atmosphere around the crypt.  Soon after we went down into the streets of Cobh to see the Lusitania Monument, which was built in the 1930’s.  Then we saw the inside of St. Coleman’s Cathedral.  It was beautiful.  Next we hopped on the bus again and went to the Lusitania graveyard.  Then we stopped for a bite of lunch.  After our lunch we went on the boat to go to Spike Island.  The boat was very good.  We arrived on Spike Island and met our tour guide, Pat.  We saw the house where little Nelly of God was born.  Then we saw the prison cell of John Mitchell.  It was very small and confined.  We saw the six-inch gun.  It was massive.  After this we went to a modern cell.  It was a lot more comfortable that John Mithelle’s cell.  Then we headed back to Cobh and went to the Commodore Hotel.  It was very tasty.  At the end of the day we went shopping and then we went home.  It was a day full of fun.

West Muskerry Football Blitz 2015

On the 19th of June, Rusheen boys and girls football teams competed in the Schools Football Blitz in Cill Na Martra.  In all, five teams were involved in the blitz, Rusheen, Vicarstown, Cill Na Martra, Scoil Abàn Naofa and Scoil Fionn Barra.  The boys teams first game was against Cill Na Martra and they won handsomely.  The girls also won their first game against Cill Na Martra in a tough match.  The boys second game was against Scoil Abàn Naofa and although being behind for a lot of the match, they came back to win by four points.  The girls also played against Scoil Abàn Naofa in their second match and they won by two points.  The next game the boys played was against Vicarstown and they won by two goals. The girls played Scoil Fionn Barra in their third match, but unfortunately they lost.  Both teams made it to the finals, which is a huge achievement.  The boys were playing Scoil Fionn Barra in the final and the girls were playing Cill Na Martra in their final.  Depsite being down 7 points at half time, the boys made a great comeback and ended up winning the match by a single point.  The girls were not so lucky in their final and lost out to a strong Cill Na Martra side.  It was a very good day out and it was lots of fun.

GREEN FLAG DAY

BRIEGE RAISES A DIFFERENT GREEN FLAG.

Rusheen N.S. had cause for great celebration last week when the school raised it’s first An Taisce Green Flag for Litter and Waste Management.  All-Ireland Winning Captain, former past pupil and local heroine Briege Corkery was the guest of honour.  The Green Flag is a symbol of the school’s environmental sustainability and awarded to schools in their efforts in reducing waste and controlling litter.

Rusheen National School’s garden enhances the beautiful local environment.  The vegetable and flower patches were complemented with the planting of a herb garden in our recently rescued famine pots.  The garden boasts many notable features, but the main attraction this year was the beautiful butterfly garden which was created by pupils, parents and teachers co-operating together.  The awarding of this flag is a testament to the work of the Green School Committee, which includes pupils, Tadhg Anthony Sheehan, Oisìn O’Neill, Kia Stevenson, Cloe O’Driscoll, Finn Stevenson and Clodagh O’Riordan, parents, Julian O’Leary and Cait Sheehan and teachers, Christy Twomey and Gerard Coakley.

Rusheen N.S. pupils, staff, friends, guests and members of local organisations enjoyed the day of celebration around the flag raising ceremony.  6th Class pupil Oisìn O’Neill outlined how the Green Flag was achieved.  Guest speaker, Mary Stack, from the Cork County Council encouraged the pupils to continue with their good habits and to strive to attain more green flags in the future while Principal, Gerard Coakley, thanked everybody for all their great efforts in achieving this award.  All the different class groupings preformed some poetry and songs for the large attendance under the guidance of Speech and Drama Teacher, Martina Ring.  Briege Corkery then made a speech before she raised the Green Flag saying that just like football that if you put in the hard work you will be rewarded.  She then raised the green flag helped by members of the Green School Committee to a big round of applause.

The ceremony concluded with a rousing rendition of the School’s Green Code Rap, “Rusheen to the Green”, composed by the Green School Committee and 5th and 6th class pupils.  After that it was party time for the rest of the day for all present and wonderful catering was provided by members of the Parents’ Association.

SR. SIOBHAN CORKERY VISITS RUSHEEN N.S.

Sr. Siobhan Corkery of Drombeg and a former pupil of Rusheen N.S. came back to her Alma Mater  last week.  Sr. Siobhan is one of the Congregational Leaders of the world renowned organisations, The Medical Missionaries of Mary.  This is an organisation that carries out great work in “Bringing The Good News To The Whole World”  and works in many countries in Africa such as South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Angola, etc.  They also work in Central America in places like Honduras, Nigeria, etc., where people are, in Sr. Siobhan’s own words, held captive by fear, poverty and violence.  They are primarily concerned about the health and wellbeing of people in these areas.

Sr. Siobhan told the pupils of the great work that her organisation does and she showed them a video “Rooted in Love”.  In it the pupils saw the plight of these poor people and how they are exploited by others.  She was then presented with a cheque of €900.00 which the 5th and 6th class pupils had raised during Lent by holding a fundraising skipathon.  She commenced the pupils for their great work and told them that she would put the money to good use helping people less well off than ourselves in other parts of the world.   Sr. Siobhan brought a number of interesting items from Africa which were then raffled among the pupils.
