CHRISTMAS MARKET

On Sunday the 3rd of December the Parents Association held our annual Christmas Market in Aghinagh Gaa Hall.

A large crowd gathered after mass; parents, past parents, grandparents and members of the wider community came to sample some home baking, a festive glass of mulled wine or indeed warm themselves with a cup of hot chocolate!

A Christmas atmosphere filled the air with carols playing in the background and Christmas Crafts decorating the hall. There was a buzz as people browsed the various side stalls, trying their hand at “guess the weight of the cake”, the bottle stall, selecting a Christmas wreath, buying tickets for a chance to win A Hotel Voucher or A Christmas Hamper, picking up Christmas gifts in the gift/voucher stall and procuring blocks, turf or coal for the months ahead.

Children busied themselves in the “Kids Corner” entertaining themselves-colouring festive pictures while waiting to have their faces painted. There was a fabulous cuddly Teddy for “Guess the Name of the Soft Toy”, which bigger children were also interested in, and by the end of the morning was named “Charlie”! There was a jar of sweets for whoever could guess the number of sweets in the jar. Children also bought raffle tickets/ Hot Chocolate jars and of course their own hand made Christmas craft.

The morning finished off with a lively auction of various items from Whiskey, Biscuits, Wine, a Keyboard, a DVD player and a beautifully decorated Christmas Tree.

Thank you to the local businesses who supported the Christmas Market, to all who were involved in running the event and to the parents for their donations and support.

Wishing parents, pupils and school staff, a very Happy Christmas!

BINGO NIGHT

In its 3rd year, Bingo was held in Aghinagh Gaa Hall just before the Halloween Break on Thursday night the 26th October. A large crowd attended including children from 3rd class upwards.

Halloween Hamper raffle tickets were on offer as well as general raffle tickets. Michael Creed got proceedings underway promptly and people were calling “check” before long.

Free tea/coffee and biscuits were available at the interval.

Local businesses were again to the fore supporting this event as well as you the parents who sponsored anything from spot prize’s to cash for a full line/full house.

Clondrohid Gaa Bingo Committee were again a great support to our event and we thank them sincerely for their help prior to and on the night.

It was a very successful event raising much needed funds for our school.

RETIREMENT FUNCTION FOR EILEEN DEASY

It has been a very busy October for the Parents Association, having two big events to host.

Eileen Deasy’s Retirement

On Saturday night 7th October, a very pleasant Retirement Party took place in Tigh Uí Laoighre, Bealnamorrive which was jointly hosted by Rusheen School P.A. and B.O.M. (Board of Management).

Eileen had been teaching in Rusheen School for 42years and saw many positive changes in Rusheen School. In the beginning, Rusheen was just a two teacher school and in those early days Eileen would have taught four classes, junior infants up to second class. In later years, as the school grew in prosperity, Eileen was tasked with the junior and senior infants and she was a master at it. She took our children under her wing when they started and she nurtured them, giving them confidence, a positive education and solid foundation going forward.

A few words and presentations were made on behalf of Rusheen P.A. and B.O.M. and Eileen aptly concluded the formalities with a rendition of “The Blackboard of My Heart”. Refreshments, (complimentary sandwiches by Jason & Katherine McCarthy) were served after the Cake cutting.

A lovely atmosphere followed where Eileen, her husband Tony, son Olan and members of her extended family gathered with parents both present and past, school staff and past pupils and the night ebbed away chatting about years gone by.

On Saturday, October 7th a well-deserved retirement function was held in Tigh Ui Laoighre, Bealnamorrive in honour of Mrs. Eileen Deasy.  Eileen’s husband, Tony, and son, Olan, were among the large crowd of family, past pupils, parents, colleagues and friends who all gathered to show their appreciation.

Eileen was Deputy Principal of Rusheen N.S. and taught in the junior side of the school for her  entire teaching career.  Speakers Gerard Coakley, Principal, Fr. Joe O’Mahony, Chairperson of the Board of Management, and Siobhan Twomey, Chairperson of the Parents’ Association, all paid tribute to Eileen for her 42 years dedicated service to Rusheen N.S.

They marvelled at her longevity of service and her enthusiastic dedication to the job.  She was a source of inspiration to all the staff and was always willing to share her wisdom and sound advice.  The wonderful and calm way she introduced junior infants to school was appreciated and her contribution to First Communion Day in Rusheen will always be remembered.  All agreed she was a marvellous teacher and laid a wonderful foundation stone for learning in Rusheen National School and she and Tony were wished many happy years of retirement together.

Eileen herself thanked everyone for coming on the night.  She had thoroughly enjoyed all the aspects of her teaching career, with the exception of “Croke Park Hours” , from the day she arrived on a Honda 50 on the 1st of September, 1975 to the present day.  She finished up with a most appropriate song “From the Blackboard of My Life”.

Presentations were then made on behalf of the Board of Management and Parents’ Association.  A beautiful retirement cake was cut and refreshments were served. A trip down memory lane ensued for the remainder of the night.

RUSHEEN N.S. PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION

Rusheen N.S. Parents Association would like to welcome all the new parents and pupils that have joined our school this September.  The Parents Association has a very active part to play in many areas of our school.  We are hugely involved in fundraising for our school which keeps it equipped with up to date teaching aids for all our children’s benefit and it also enables us to subsidise various activities such as swimming, dancing and speech and drama.  We have had a busy start to the new school year with our first school fundraiser being the Annual Table Quiz.  This was held late October in the Castle Hotel.  As usual it was well supported and a good night was had by all.

This was our third year holding the Children’s Halloween Fancy Dress Disco.  This was held in Rusheen Hall on Halloween night and was a great success.  It was an enjoyable night for the children as they got to show off their costumes and have a bit of fun with their friends.

Our next Fundraiser is our Annual Christmas Bring and Buy and Auction which is held on the first Sunday of December in Rusheen Hall after Rusheen 11:00a.m. Mass.  This is a great social morning for all parents, children and the community.  On the morning there would be a cake sale, Christmas wreaths stall, sweet shop, raffle and many more stalls with items of interest to suit both young and old.  Mark this in your calendar.
