FAMINE SOUP

On the 26th of April, in commemoration of the Famine, we made famine soup.  We soaked peas in cold water for two hours.  Then cooked them in hot water and added pearl barley and stock.  In another pot we made vegetable soup with carrots, stock, potatoes, mushrooms, basil, garlic, turnip, onion, salt and pepper.  Some people enjoyed the famine soup, but most thought it was inedible!  It was mushy green peas swimming in watery green goo!  However, the vegetable soup was delicious and almost everybody liked it.  Although we hated the famine soup, we would have eaten it in Famine times!
